Hewanorra Int'l Airport Apron Nearing Final Stages (Slideshow)

Following the briefing of over 40 CIE Ltd workers by the Hewanorra Airport Security Personnel, work on the apron has picked up pace at an alarming rate. The huge labour force is working some very odd hours - 10:00 pm - 6:00 am most of the time, to see the completion of this project which has been delayed due to heavy rains.

Presently the network of reinforced steel has been done and now over 380 cu yd of concrete has been poured so far, to get this rigid sturdy surface for these giant super jets.

CIE Ltd engineers on the site are quite pleased with the works' progress for the seven or more days since the influx of the forty plus workers.

CIE Ltd is a very co-operative and understanding company which takes into consideration all the options available to it to make the work process smooth and with little or no disruption to the normal operations of its clients. Paving of the airport terminal's road was no exception. To pave the front road of the airport terminal and not to disrupt the daytime airport services, work had to commence at approximately 10:00 pm and run into the wee hours of the next day.

Over 40 CIE Employees Briefed By Hewanorra Airport Security Personnel

Over forty (40) employees from Construction and Industrial Equipment Ltd (CIE) gathered together at the Port Police Barracks Conference Room on Tuesday January 6, 2016 at about 3:00 pm for a briefing on airport security guidelines. The facilitator was Ag Superintendent Urban Clovis, a 25-year-old serving officer of the Port Police Division, who recently took up this new appointment.

Wikipedia states, “Airport security attempts to prevent any threats or potentially dangerous situations from arising or entering the country. If airport security does succeed in this, then the chances of any dangerous situations, illegal items or threats entering into aircraft, country or airport is greatly reduced.”

After welcoming everyone present, and introducing himself, Superintendent Clovis began by informing the gathering about St Lucia’s connections with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Transport Security organization (TSA). He went on, “St Lucia is a signatory to ICAO, and TSA  and is subject to the standards set by them. This briefing is one of the requirements set by the ICAO whenever you are introducing new persons into a restricted area of the airport. The ICAO sets standards and regulations necessary for aviation safety, security, efficiency and regularity, as well as for aviation environmental protection while the TSA’s role is to communicate policies to travelers and assist in improving airport security among travelers.”

"Bearing this in mind, regular security audits are conducted at the Hewanorra International Airport by two aforementioned organizations to make sure those security personnel is in compliance with the standards set.” Clovis reiterated.

Works on  a section of airport apron

The restricted area mentioned here is the parking area or apron, which presently is under construction by CIE. Clovis continued, “The airport apron is a parking area where anyone can place a tool, an instrument, or a bomb that can cause an act of unlawful interference, an unlawful act, or something that can put the lives of persons using the airport or boarding an airline. Airport security serves several purposes: To protect the airport and country from any threatening events, to reassure the traveling public that they are safe and to protect the country and their people.”

The reasons behind this briefing for such a large number of workers at any one time, is that concrete and asphalting works are due to begin this week at the airport apron.

The facilitator went on to present to the workers the general conditions under which they must operate. The main feature of the briefing revolved around general conditions - prohibited items within the restricted area. Mr Clovis spoke to these various topics:

• ·         Tools security
• ·         Screening at the checkpoint
• ·         Firearms, controlled drugs and unnecessary items
• ·         Compliance with directives from port police and security personnel
• ·         Suspicious activities
• ·         Use of Port authority ID
• ·         Reflective vests
• ·         Boundaries within restricted area.

Throughout the session individual workers quizzed the facilitator on various issues raised in his presentation. Two notable questions pertained to the use of telephone and firearms on the premises – firearms are not allowed and phone calls are permissible.

At the conclusion of the briefing someone on behalf of CIE Ltd, moved the vote of thanks. The session lasted about ninety (90) mins.

CIE Ltd Mourns One of Its Longest Serving Employees!

The death of an employee is a traumatic event that may greatly affect the workplace. Whether the death arose from prolonged illness or a sudden event, some employees will experience feelings of grief and loss.

How the employees cope with the loss depends on many factors, from their personal beliefs to the presence of other stress in their lives. For some employees, thoughts of the deceased may make it hard to focus on work for a while. Others may find it difficult to get back on track, resulting in mistakes that can disrupt the company's functioning.

This may very well be the effects on the staff after hearing the tragic end of the life to one of CIE Ltd longest serving employees - Joseph Herman aka Percy - he was stabbed on Jeremie Street on Old Year’s night and succumbed on New Year’s day. He was 45 years old.

It’s hard to know someone without actually meeting him. However, a good story about an individual enables the listener to have insight into that person. After listening to Simon Straughn's emotional phone call about his friend Percy, I felt like I knew Percy on a personal level.

 Percy, who hails from Soufriere has been part of the company from its inception says the emotional voice at the other end of the telephone. "Percy was a highly valuable and respected member of our team here and the effects of his passing are already being felt here by his fellow employees and management. He was a wonderful employee who understood the meaning of the word "team." He was always more focused on the good of the company and the department than on his own benefit. He made many great contributions to the company and helped it move forward in numerous ways. His work here will not soon be forgotten."  Simon recalls.

  The near tearful friend recalls the times with Percy when they used to go to parties, sharing whatever they had, working long hours with friends like Chicken, Yellow, and Horace, to mention a few, and were all humbled by his kindness and compassion to everyone around him. According to Simon, the company's employees intend to fly black flags on their vehicles and equipment to show their respects. 

  Mr Gajadhar, on behalf of his company, extends sincere condolences to Percy's friends and the family. Percy was a remarkable man and everyone at CIE Ltd is better for having known him. He will be greatly missed and everyone here is saddened by his death. Our thoughts and prayers are with Percy's family and friends during this difficult time.

 Percy leaves behind two daughters, 11 and 22 years old, a 5 year old son, who celebrated his birthday yesterday, and his common law lady.

Mr Gajadhar is convinced that we control how we approach our days in and out of the office. He also thinks we must commit to being better every day, learn more, be more responsive, be more connected, be more aware, be tougher, be more resilient, be more creative and be more present.  In short, we should just be better.
