How to Make Your Shower Tile Look Fresh and NewThis Easter?

Have you recently taken a close look at the tiles in your shower? Did you notice that grout is missing around certain tiles or it is discoloured? When the grout fails or becomes discoloured or stained, sometimes it's necessary to completely remove the old grout and regrout your tile.

A before and after view
Shower  grout can fail for many reasons. Improper initial installation or mixing of the grout can cause premature failure. Harsh acid based cleaners can degrade grout over time. Tiles that are set too close together can cause grout to “pop out”. Time in general can cause gout to fail. It is vitally important to rectify this as soon as possible. Water that migrates behind the tiles and into the wall can cause mold to form.  Also – tiles will begin to loosen and possibly fall off the wall.

Any time you as a homeowner see grout that is missing you should have it repaired as soon as possible. Follow the steps below and you will have your bathroom tile looking fresh and new with little effort.
You will need the following tools to complete your task:-
Grout saw           Bag of grout        Grout float                5-gallon bucket
Water                 Sponges               Rubber gloves            Microfiber towels

Grout saw
Remove the old grout:
To do it right you’re going to have to dig out all your old grout. Use the grout saw to "saw" the old grout out of the tile. Place the saw into the grout line and saw back and forth. Make sure to remove as much grout as possible—at least two-thirds—because you want to ensure that there is enough tile edge for the new grout to adhere to. When you're finished removing the old grout, sweep or vacuum up any grout dust that remains.

Mix and apply new grout:
Once all your grout is removed and you have your new grout, it's cake from here. Every grout product has its own mixing requirements, so read and follow the directions for the grout product you're using. Mix you up some grout and get your "float" ready and go to town.

You can use your hands or a grout float and scoop some grout out of the bucket and onto the tile and force the grout into the grout lines - you can use your finger and jam the grout in the cracks.

If you are doing a wall, start at the bottom of the wall. If you are doing a floor, start at the corner farthest from the door so as to not stress about walking or crawling over your work. Spread your grout and let it set-up for about 5 minutes.

Work in a small area at a time because you do not want the grout to dry before you have the desired finish you want. The grout should be almost flush with the top of the tile. Grout lines should be full but not over-filled. Use the float and run it along the grout lines at a 45-degree angle to smooth it out.

Cleaning the tile
Cleaning the tile:
Now you will notice the grout makes a mess on your tile. You’ll want to clean this up! Make sure to have a bucket of water and a clean sponge prepped. After the grout has set for about 20-30 minutes, wring out your sponge really good and lightly go over the tile in circular motions.

After you have cleaned off the tiles, wring out the sponge and wipe along the grout line to smooth it out. Now, do not touch your work. Be patient and let the grout set and dry completely.

Removing the haze:
After about an hour, go over the entire surface a second time for a final cleaning to remove a haze over the top of the tile. You will want remove the haze immediately because if you wait a day or so, it will be much more difficult to remove.

Removing the haze
Get a fresh bucket of water and a new sponge. Once again, be sure to wring out the sponge thoroughly and wipe down the tile to remove the haze. More than likely, you will have to wipe down the tile several times to remove all the haze completely. This can take some time, but you will want to make sure all the haze is gone. One tip for removing the haze is to use microfiber towels. They are inexpensive and can remove a large portion of the haze in one wipe-down.

Be sure to let the grout set for 24 to 48 hours before you take a shower or allow any water to come in contact with the area you just grouted.

Do you have any projects you would like to post? Send them to our blog email at - we will be happy to post them on our blog.

4 Tips to Increase Your Smartphone's Battery Life.

We use our phone almost all the time, for watching movies to listening to music and browsing Internet, likewise when it’s subjected to heavy usage the internal battery is more likely to be degraded, so even before the nighttime comes around, the battery is close to zero or already dead. This is a very frustrating moment, especially if we constantly use the phone for important things, and in moments like night parties, overtime or when hanging out outside.

Do you know how to keep your smartphone's battery healthy?

Probably not. In fact, you may have been hastening the death of your phone's battery with your charging habits.

If you want to keep your smartphone battery in top condition and go about your day without worrying about battery life, you need to change a few things. You can coax more life out of your phone by charging the battery correctly. Here are a few tips:-
1 - Avoid keeping your phone plugged in when it's fully charged
According to Cadex, a company that offers devices that test smartphone batteries, among others offers a lot of information on its site “Battery University”, (

Leaving your phone plugged in when it's fully charged, like you might overnight, is bad for the battery in the long run, the company suggests.

Once your smartphone has reached 100% charge, it gets "trickle charges" to keep it at 100% while plugged in. It keeps the battery in a high-stress, high-tension state, which wears down the chemistry within.
- Keep your phone cool

Smartphone batteries are very sensitive to heat. Certain cases we use are sometimes insulate  heat from the phone.

If you notice that your device gets hot when you charge it, take it out of its case first. If you're out in the hot sun, keep your phone covered. It'll protect your battery's health.

And if you’re not using your phone, turn it to airplane mode or turn it off. Putting it in airplane mode will allow you to keep time and play music, but that will be it. These two options make it easier to save your battery and prevent it from heating up.

3 - Charge your phone as often as you can
To get the most out of your smartphone's battery, you'll need to charge it properly. It turns out that the batteries in our smartphones are much happier if you charge them occasionally throughout the day instead of plugging them in for a big charging session when they're empty.

The best way to charge your phone is a little at a time, whenever you have a chance.

Just plug it in whenever you can, even if it's for a few minutes, and you'll be fine. It's fine to plug and unplug it multiple times a day.

Repeatedly allowing the battery to drain fully may shorten its life and decrease its overall capacity.
4 – Try not to charge your phone to 100%
According to Battery University, "Li-ion does not need to be fully charged, nor is it desirable to do so. In fact, it is better not to fully charge, because a high voltage stresses the battery" and wears it away in the long run.

Your battery will also perform better if you don't let it charge to 100 percent, so take it off the charger at about 80 to 90 percent capacity.

10 Tools Every Self-Respecting Homeowner Must Own

Are you one of those homeowners who regularly go over to your next door neighbor to borrow a hammer, screwdriver, pliers or spanner to get some home repairs done? Though a few neighbors may be willing to share, others may not be so generous and may have strange thoughts swirling in their heads like “You mean to tell me Peter can’t afford a screwdriver?” - Surely you get the drift! Get over this and set yourself up to have your own set of tools this year.

Every homeowner knows that it is important to have a selection of common tools on hand to complete daily tasks in and around the house, and a homeowner tool kit puts all the essentials within reach. Whether it is fixing a leaking kitchen faucet, installing window blinds or adding a headlight to your son’s bicycle, a handy set of tools is a must-have.

Dillan, our Customer Sales Representative in the Handy Tools Department suggests that for the new or novice homeowner, there are many purchases and upgrades to consider when it comes to spending your money on improving and maintaining your house. "One of the first things you should do as a new homeowner is to get a well-stocked tool kit. Purchasing good, essential tools early on is a smart investment that will pay off dividends in terms of time and money," he reiterates.

Rayneau carries a wide selection of handy homeowner tools to help you complete any project.
Here’s a rundown of some basic tools that you’ll probably want to have handy.

Cordless Drill: Number one on our list is a cordless drill.  With this tool, you will save a lot of time and frustration with your projects.  Trying to sink a screw into wood by hand is tedious and tiring.  The convenience of wireless electric power makes quick work of lots of small projects. Invest in both a good-quality drill and good-quality drill bit sets. We do recommend that you purchase nothing smaller than a 14 volt set, though.  The smaller voltage drills have less torque and tend to run out of power sooner.

Shop: 1/2" Cordless Hammer Driver Drill Makita DHP458Z

Here are the other recommended tools in no particular order….You’ll want to have some simple hand tools around, the first of which would be a hammer
Hammer:  Find a hammer that has a comfortable grip. Vibration-dampening coatings on the grip can also come in handy. Since you’ll probably utilize your hammer for the occasional demolition in addition to pounding nails, choose a model with a straight or “rip” claw in lieu of a curved claw. Make sure the head of the hammer is smooth (as opposed to dimpled or checkered) to avoid surface damage and nail slippage.

Shop:Mintcraft TPL 16C Claw Hammer Steel, 16-Ounce

Screwdrivers:  Invest in a good-quality mixed set that includes a variety of flat head and Phillips head sizes. Magnetic heads come in handy, but be sure to have a pouch or Ziploc bag on hand to keep up with them if your set doesn’t include storage. Some people prefer to use screwdriver bits with their cordless electric drills to make things push-button simple, but it’s important to keep a couple of simple metal screwdrivers in your collection.

Shop:Mintcraft SD-Set-7 Screwdriver Set, 10-piece

Pliers:  Pliers are essential for holding tiny objects firmly when you need to manipulate them. With enough torque applied, they can pull, pinch or bend metal into shape as well. Make sure you get a good set including long-nose pliers, combination pliers, and locking pliers to cover your needs. Once you’re more comfortable with repairs, you’ll probably want a wire stripper as part of your pliers set to help with electrical projects.

Shop: Stanley 84-034 8-Inch Bi-Material Groove Joint Pliers

Wrenches:  At the very least, you’ll need a few adjustable wrenches in different sizes. They can manipulate hex nuts and bolts, which is invaluable when it comes to home repair and assembly. Combination wrenches will cover the gaps they can’t reach. As you grow more comfortable with your wrenches, expand to a ratchet and socket set to make bolt manipulation quicker.

Shop: Mintcraft JL149103L 10-Inch Adjustable Wrench Vinyl Coated Handle - Carded

Measuring Tape:  Whether you’re planning to replace an installed appliance such as a wall oven or looking to upgrade an entire room, a tape measure is an especially invaluable tool. Pick up an easy-locking ¾-inch-wide model to start. Skinnier tape measures may fall out of place, and fatter ones can be overkill. As time goes on, you may want to add a smaller, pocket-size model to take with you on shopping trips.

Shop: Stanley 30-454 25-by-1-Inch Stanley Tape Rule

Level:  These hand-sized tools are must-haves for tasks varying from installing new kitchen cabinets to simply hanging a new picture frame. While there are several types available, low-tech analog models with a floating bubble are quite accurate and inexpensive.

Shop: Stanley 42-240 24-Inch Professional I-Beam Level

Utility Knife:  A high-quality utility knife does everything from opening heavily taped bags and boxes. A comfortable feeling utility knife is also good to have.  You know how hard it can be to open some of those packages wrapped in that hard, clear plastic.  Besides, you’ll find it necessary if you need to trim drywall, cut away carpet edges, scrape away resin or paint that may keep a window stuck,or even sharpen your carpenter pencil!  Some of these knives store extra blades in the handle, so you’ve always got spare blades when you need one.

Shop: Mintcraft Knife Utility Retract 6-1/4in

Hand Saw: Less intimidating than a power saw and faster to set up, this handsaw is good for trimming lumber or molding stock because it cuts on the pull and push strokes. The image of a fine handsaw has long been the emblem of a craftsman at work. A good general purpose handsaw is useful for trimming branches off your tree or cutting lumber for a project around the house.

Shop: Stanley Consumer Tools 15-335 20-Inch Short-Cut Handsaw

Flashlight:  Necessary repairs can happen in dark, cramped spaces and even when the power is out. While smartphone camera “flashlights” work in a pinch, you'll need a sturdy flashlight on hand that doesn’t depend on whether you remembered to plug up your phone. If your lights go out unexpectedly or you need powerful light that helps you probe around when you hear noises in the middle of the night, a trusty LED flashlight cannot be beat.

Shop: Power Zone Flashlight

Dillan wants to  remind you that you don’t have to own every tool out there to do most household repairs.  But these basic tools will give you lots of flexibility to do those small projects. Get yourself a small tool box or bucket and keep them all together and when you go to tackle that project, you’ll have everything in one place.
